How do you pray for a nation?

First, why should we even bother to pray for our nation? Because God hears and answers prayers.

“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.”

Psalm 145:18-19 (NIV)

The enemy goes round like a roaring lion, seeking who he can devour. We can see it all around us in our nations, so much is changing for the worse. As if righteousness is vanishing from the earth. To bring a stop to it, we also need to pray with everything we have (without ceasing, at all times), and ask God to heal our nations, bless our nations, turn wickedness into righteousness, prosper our nations, and bring peace and unity.

God wants to heal and bless our nations, but we first need to pray (and repent). We should stand on the gap in the wall and pray for our countries.

“I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one.”

Ezekiel 22:30 (NLT)

How, then, do we pray for our nation?

Interestingly, there isn’t a right or wrong way to pray for our nations because the outcome doesn’t depend on us. It depends on our all-powerful God. And he is the one who said our prayers will avail much:

“The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”

James 5:16 (NLT)

What Bible verse is used when praying for nations?

When you intercede for your nation, it is a good idea to pray based on the Word of the Lord. God’s Word is alive and powerful (Hebrews 4:12). Which Bible verse should you use when praying for nations?

Well, there isn’t just one specific Bible verse to use when praying for a nation. Many scriptures can serve as your basis for a powerful prayer for your nation. In addition, people may have their preference for certain verses to use when interceding for a nation.

My favorite Bible verse I use when praying for my nation is 2 Chronicles 7:14.

“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”

This Scripture links prayer to healing and forgiveness for the nations. It is a powerful promise in the Word of God. God is faithful—when He promises, He fulfills. The Bible verse also includes what our own attitude should be when praying on behalf of our nations: humble, seeking God above anything else.

With this in mind, there is one more thing to do before praying for your country. And that is to put on the full armor of God. Why? The devil is preying around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he can devour. He doesn’t want us to pray for our nations. So he will try to attack you personally, distract you, confuse you, etc. He wishes to keep his grip on nations. The more reason we should stand in the gap for our nations and intercede.

By wearing the whole armor of God, we protect ourselves. We place ourselves in the right position to pray for the nation.

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”

Ephesians 6:11-13 (NIV)

Does this mean we should be afraid when praying for our nation? No! God is more powerful than the devil. And He has given us His armor to protect us. All we have to do is:

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Ephesians 6:14-17 (NIV)

When praying for our nations we can pray specifically for the country’s leaders—the government leaders. Why? Because that’s actually what God’s Word also asks us specifically to do in 1 Timothy 2. The kings, emperors, and those in authority represent our modern-day government leaders. If a country is governed by a king or queen, ‘king’ refers to them. Praying for them will ensure us a quiet life.

Here are 9 prayer points for government leaders with Bible verses:

  1. Intercession for nation leaders to live in peace: 1 Timothy 2:1–2 (NIV). “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
  2. Wisdom for government leaders to serve the Lord: Psalm 2:10-11 (ESV). “Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.”
  3. Wise advisors around government leaders: Proverbs 11:14 (NIV). “For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.”
  4. Righteousness of government leaders: Proverbs 14:34 (ESV). “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”
  5. God to turn the leaders’ hearts: Proverbs 21:1 (ESV). “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.”
  6. Government leaders to grasp their God-given position: Romans 13:1 (NIV). “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.”

What is an example of prayer for the nation?

Our prayers do not necessarily need to be long, as the length of our prayers doesn’t determine the power of prayer. Quick prayers can be as powerful as long ones.

In the previous section, we looked at examples of brief prayers for the nation with Bible verses. Now we’ll explore longer example prayers. Keep in mind these are just examples. The most important thing to do when interceding for your nation is to allow yourself to be guided by the Holy Spirit. We don’t know which principalities reign in the nation—but God does.

We can use current-day circumstances in our country to pray along, and we can pray general prayers for the nation. Open yourself to the presence of God and let the power of God infuse your prayers. Ask for divine wisdom. Let the spirit of the Lord guide you and just start praying.

Prayer for our country in crisis: Dear Lord, we are in times of turmoil. Our country is in a deep crisis situation. Wrong is seen as right, and right is seen as wrong. Lord, You said in Your Word that we should ask for the nations. I am asking for my nation. Please intervene. Let those in high positions turn their hearts to You. Let Your spirit of wisdom reign where national decisions are being made. May the body of Christ arise and take over. You also said You’d defend Your children. Right now, Lord, we are under attack. Protect us from seen and unseen enemies in the land. You are our strong tower in whom we seek refuge. May You become the refuge of this nation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer to destroy the strongholds in the nation: Father God, this is a great nation, but it is under attack. Evil spirits are trying to take control. But I know the whole earth and everything on it belongs to You. Wash this nation and its leaders with the blood of Jesus. Purify and cleanse us—all of us. Father, You are higher than anything below, on, and above this earth. Take control. Break the strongholds that reign this nation and let Your Spirit blow Your life into the nation. Protect God’s people against the enemy. Let Your will be done in my country as it is in heavenly places. Take Your rightful place and destroy the strongholds. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the Name above every name! We pronounce liberty and freedom over this nation. We pronounce Your Kingdom come! Hallelujah! It is done. Thank You, Lord. Amen.

Spiritual warfare prayers for the nation: Lord God Almighty, You created this Earth and everything on it. It belongs to You. Wicked darkness and evil spirits are trying to bring this country into turmoil. Lord God, take control. In the Name of Jesus, we come against every spirit and power of darkness and all principalities of the evil one. They have been defeated on the cross. Christ Jesus took all power and authority. Sweep the land with Your Spirit, and bring repentance to every corner of the nation. We take our authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and we come against the army of the enemy, and it shall not harm us in any way. Father, take control over this nation. Throw away every evil spirit and power. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Prayer for spiritual revival in the country: Lord God, You are Holy. We worship You. You deserve all the praise. Father, revive this country. Let the spirit of unity flow through this nation and let the family of believers grow exponentially. We need a fresh revival so every knee will bow and every tongue confess that You are Lord. You alone reign high above. There are so many unbelievers in this country. Please draw them to You. We pray for the sake of those souls. You died for them as well. Let this be the time for the great harvest. Touch Your children and let them have a new desire for soul-winning. You are the Lord of the Harvest. Send Your laborers to bring in the bountiful harvest. We are ready to go and gather in. Thank You, Lord, for hearing our prayers. I know You are faithful. Amen.
