How is spiritual warfare done?

Whether or not we like it, we are engaged in a spiritual battle. The moment we become born again (a child of God), we become the enemy of the devil. Once we join God’s Kingdom, we are propelled into spiritual warfare. God knows this and equips us for battle.

Moreover, He Himself does the biggest part: He fights for us. And He is our hiding place. It is from this secure place, knowing that the Almighty God is on our side, that we engage in the battlefield.

We need to be aware of this spiritual battle, as the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom he can devour (1 Peter 5:8). We need to be vigilant and ready for battle.

Our faith itself is a fight, a good fight. Having faith in itself is spiritual warfare. The forces of darkness don’t like the light in us. They aren’t even fighting us personally; they fight us because we belong to God and His light is in us.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

2 Timothy 4 (NKJV)

If you want to know how spiritual warfare is done, the number one thing to recognize is that it is indeed a spiritual battle—not a natural one. The work of the enemy may be seen in people around us trying to attack us, but the people themselves are not our enemies.

Second, our weapons aren’t natural either. We are engaged in a spiritual battle and God gives us spiritual weapons. Mighty weapons to fight against the wiles of the devil.

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.”

2 Corinthians 10:3-4 (NKJV)

One of those powerful weapons is the Word of God. Knowing and applying God’s Word in our lives is vital for spiritual warfare. We can only win when we fight based on the truth of the Scriptures.

“For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”

Hebrews 4:12 (NLT)

Engaging in spiritual warfare, we need to wear the whole armor for God. No soldier enters the battlefield without weapons and protective clothing. The same applies to us.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV)

By being aware of the spiritual realm, putting on the whole armor of God, and taking our spiritual weapons at hand, we are ready for spiritual warfare. This is one of the powerful characteristics of a prayer warrior.

Is prayer a weapon of spiritual warfare?

The real battle is the spiritual warfare of good versus evil. There’s an ongoing war for our souls, with evil forces trying to distance us from God. Through Christ Jesus, we already won the battle—as Christ overcame death with the resurrection.

God gave us weapons for warfare, spiritual warfare. Those weapons are mighty in pulling down strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4).

What is spiritual warfare prayer? When you think of prayer, you may not think it’s a weapon: sitting quietly with folded hands, or on your knees in your Christian prayer room, with hands lifted in church, or quietly in your head during your commute. None of these acts look active or strong. Yet prayer is the most powerful weapon God gave us.

Prayer is not just a passive act of communication with God—it is a powerful tool in spiritual warfare. When we pray, we are actively engaging in the battle against the enemy. Prayer allows us to communicate with God, seek His guidance and protection, and ask for His intervention in our lives and the lives of others.

In Ephesians 6:18, Paul urges us to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” This shows that prayer is not limited to a specific time or place, but should be a continuous and varied practice. We can pray in the Spirit, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our prayers and intercede on our behalf.

Prayer is a weapon because it aligns us with God’s will and invites His power and presence into our lives. It strengthens our faith and dependence on Him, enabling us to overcome the attacks of the enemy. Through prayer, we can bind the forces of darkness, break strongholds, and release God’s power and blessings.

When we pray, we are acknowledging our reliance on God and surrendering our battles to Him. We can pray for protection, wisdom, strength, and discernment. Prayer allows us to partner with God in His work and take part in His victory over the enemy.

Prayer is not to be taken lightly. Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of prayer, teaching His disciples to pray and modeling a life of prayer. Through prayer, we tap into the supernatural realm and unleash the power of God in our lives and circumstances.

We need to be mindful, though, that it is not our power, but the power of God. Without Him, we are nothing.

“The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”

James 5:16 (NLT)

What is an example of a warfare prayer?

If you’re starting to battle spiritually, it might be useful to have some examples of spiritual warfare prayers to start with. God’s Word is the ultimate place to start—many Bible verses talk about spiritual warfare. Lord Jesus Himself engaged in spiritual battle every day of His life. He therefore made sure He prayed throughout the day and took time each day to be alone with the father.

The prayer Christ Jesus taught us to pray is “The Lord’s prayer.” He said that prayer entails everything and suffices to pray. This means it is also a spiritual warfare prayer! It is a powerful way to start your spiritual battle prayers.

Further in this blog, I will share several sample prayers, each with an explanation and a Scripture. But before we go into the types of spiritual warfare and examples of spiritual warfare prayers, we need to remind ourselves that we already won the battle (and the war!).

We already have the victory—not because of our powerful prayers, but because Jesus won the victory for us. We engage in spiritual war, knowing we already won!!! Is there any better way than this to enter the battlefield?

So, we don’t pray to try and win our spiritual battles… we pray to proclaim the victory!

“No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me, declares the Lord.”

Isaiah 54:17 (NKJV)

“Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you.”

Luke 10:19 (NLT)

“No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.” (NLT)

Romans 8:37

“But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.”

1 John 4:4 (NLT)

All the above verses are the ultimate spiritual warfare prayers scriptures.

We need to keep in mind that our prayers are answered based on our faith and our Christian living. When we engage in spiritual warfare prayers but have no faith, our prayers won’t work. The same if we are willfully sinning. God answers prayers. True. But we need to have the right attitude.

It is a good thing to first confess your sins to God and ask Him for forgiveness. Then pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in your warfare prayers. And end each powerful prayer with thanksgiving. We shouldn’t take God or answered prayer for granted.

Spiritual warfare example prayers

Each of the above spiritual warfare prayer points included a brief sample prayer and a corresponding Bible Verse. In this section, I will give examples of longer spiritual warfare prayers to give you an idea of how that could look.

Note that these are examples for inspiration. God created each of us differently and for a different purpose. So, your prayers may differ from mine—and that is perfectly fine! Don’t underestimate the power of your prayer. Prayers don’t need to include high and lofty words, nor do they need to be long. The power of our prayers is not in our words, but in the power that God adds to them.

For me, that is one of the main reasons I like to pray based on the Scriptures. God honors His Word. Praying based on Bible verses is praying in line with God’s will. The Scriptures are full of powerful Bible verses about prayer warriors.

If you want to focus on specific prayers, you could write your spiritual battle prayers in a prayer journal, so you can look back and pray again. Grab your Bible pens and highlighters and just start!

What are the types of spiritual warfare?

Similar to military combat, there are various types of spiritual warfare. Spiritual attacks are not just of one sort, they are many—causing us to need several types of warfare strategies as well.

Christ Jesus also used multiple ways of fighting spiritual battles. He prayed, cast our demons, lay hands, commanded evil spirits, declared God’s Word, etc. As His followers, we need to do the same—we need to employ various weapons to win the battle, not just one.

Here are the 12 types of spiritual warfare:

  1. The Name of Jesus Christ. The Name of Jesus is the Name above all names (Phil. 2:9) and every knee must bow at the hearing of His Name (Phil. 2:10-11). When we call on the Name of Jesus, we engage in a spiritual war. In His Name, we have the victory. It’s the reason we close our prayers with “In Jesus’ Name” or “In the mighty Name of Jesus”.
  2. Prayer. Prayer is a powerful tool in spiritual battles. It is often said we win our battles on our knees—that is, in prayer. Jesus prayed each day and often excluded Himself from the masses to pray to His Father.
  3. God’s Word. The Word of God itself is a weapon. It’s vital to know Scriptures for ourselves, so we can use them in our battle plan. “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” Hebrews 4:12 (NLT).
  4. The word of our mouth. The way we speak determines the way we live—good or bad (Proverbs 18:21). With our mouth, we can bring blessing or curse, deliverance, or bondage. When we speak, we need to be mindful of the power of our tongues. In spiritual warfare, we can speak the truth of God’s Word, for example, in declaring Biblical declarations over yourself.
  5. Laying on of hands. The laying on of hands is a spiritual act, not a natural one. When we combine it with prayer, we give way to the release of the power of the Holy Spirit through the laying of hands (Acts 8:17; 1 Timothy 4:14).
  6. Fasting with prayer. Fasting is a spiritual discipline. It helps us pray more earnestly and hear more clearly from God. With fasting, we lay down all distractions and focus on God, His Power, and His Word. Fasting makes our bodies weak, but gives us spiritual strength.
  7. Praise and worship. Praise is a powerful weapon in spiritual warfare. Praising the Lord makes things happen in the spiritual realm. Worship opens our hearts to God and His dealings—we surrender ourselves to Him in worship. In the Old Testament, they didn’t have the name of Jesus as a weapon, but they had praise. Think of Joshua, where God ordered praise as a weapon against Jericho.
  8. Anointing oil. Anointing oil is used to set something or someone apart for the Lord—it sanctifies. It is a weapon for spiritual warfare, for example in healing the sick (James 5:14-15).
  9. Casting out of demons. Spiritual warfare is all about the dark powers that fight against God’s children. In the battle of spiritual warfare, it is vital to cast out demons. And we don’t have to be afraid, as God has given us the power to do so (Mark 3:15).
  10. Faith. Our faith is a weapon: “For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.” (1 John 5:4 NLT). By having faith, we wage war in the spiritual realm.
  11. Character (Christian living). Our living is also part of spiritual warfare. We can protect ourselves against the schemes of the devil by living righteously.
  12. Our testimony. We overcome through the blood of Jesus Christ (the Lamb) and our testimony (Revelation 12:11). Sharing about God and what he has done for us is a powerful weapon of warfare.

When should we pray spiritual warfare prayers?

Is there a specific time that is best for spiritual warfare prayers? No, there isn’t. God wants us to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This means we can pray at any time of the day. No matter where we are and whether we are engaged in activities or set time aside purely for prayer.

Our spiritual life is not sometimes on and sometimes off. Neither is the war in the heavenly places. We are in a constant battle against evil spirits and evil forces. But we have the victory! Through the Word of the Lord and God’s divine power, we will overcome every battle, no matter how intense.

Prayer should be an attitude of our hearts—anytime, anywhere. Not just once a week or only midnight prayers. Neither should we only pray during difficult times.

Here are the (daily) types of spiritual battle prayers:

  • daily warfare prayer (throughout the day).
  • morning warfare prayers (during your Christian morning routine).
  • warfare prayer before going to bed (making prayer the last thing you do in a day).
  • night time spiritual warfare prayers (setting time aside when everything else is quiet).
  • midnight spiritual warfare prayers (a daily specific time when you can pray alone).

What are the prayer points on Psalm 35?

Psalm 35 is a powerful prayer of David during a period of adversity or conflict in His life.

He started by asking for his enemies to be destroyed. That’s really our human nature—we want the ‘other’ to be destroyed. But God loves everyone, even our enemies. Even though we can feel tempted to request God to move the people who harmed us out of the way, we can also be like David—he was a man of God’s heart.

Psalm 35 evolves from an aggressive prayer to a spiritual warfare prayer for help. He expresses his innermost deep pain and struggles and asks God to help him. What a powerful prayer!

As Christians, we follow Christ Jesus. And Jesus Christ asked us to love our enemies and to pray for them. So, even though Psalm 35 is an aggressive prayer, we can pray the points in it with the heart and spirit of Jesus.

Here are the powerful prayer points of Psalm 35 (NLT):

  • Ask God to defend you. (Put on your armor, and take up your shield. Prepare for battle, and come to my aid. Verse 2).
  • Ask God to give you the victory in your battles. (Let me hear you say, “I will give you victory!” Verse 3).
  • Turn my enemies away. (Blow them away like chaff in the wind—a wind sent by the angel of the LORD. Verse 5).
  • Proof my innocence. (I did them no wrong, but they laid a trap for me. I did them no wrong, but they dug a pit to catch me. Verse 7).
  • Let my enemies fall into the trap they set for me. (Let them be caught in the trap they set for me! Let them be destroyed in the pit they dug for me. Verse 8).
  • Rescue me and give me victory. (Then I will rejoice in the LORD. I will be glad because he rescues me. Verse 9).
  • Gratitude for deliverance. (With every bone in my body I will praise him: ‘LORD, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong? Who else protects the helpless and poor from those who rob them?’ Verse 10).
  • Prevent the plans of my unknown enemies. (Verses 11-16).
  • Save me from the attacks of the enemy. (How long, O Lord, will you look on and do nothing? Rescue me from their fierce attacks. Protect my life from these lions! Verse 17).
  • Thanksgiving. (Then I will thank you in front of the great assembly. I will praise you before all the people. Verse 18).
  • Don’t let my enemies cheer over me. (Don’t let my treacherous enemies rejoice over my defeat. Don’t let those who hate me without cause gloat over my sorrow. Verse 19).
  • Lord, rise on my behalf. (O LORD, you know all about this. Do not stay silent. Do not abandon me now, O Lord. Wake up! Rise to my defense! Take up my case, my God and my Lord. Verses 22-23).
  • Declare me not guilty. (Declare me not guilty, O LORD my God, for you give justice. Don’t let my enemies laugh about me in my troubles. Verse 24).
  • Let the ones that jubilate over me receive what they planned for me. (May those who rejoice at my troubles be humiliated and disgraced. May those who triumph over me be covered with shame and dishonor. Verse 26).
  • Give joy to everyone who helped me. (But give great joy to those who came to my defense. Let them continually say, “Great is the LORD, who delights in blessing his servant with peace! Verse 27).
  • Praise and thanksgiving. (Then I will proclaim your justice, and I will praise you all day long. Verse 28).
