Before we can dive into personalizing Psalm 91, we need to understand what actually the Psalm means. Psalm 91 is often called Psalm of Protection, or Prayer of protection.

The beautiful Psalm starts with a double declaration.

First, it declares that when you dwell in God’s presence, under His protection (shelter, covering), you will find rest. You find that in His shadow—meaning you need to stay very close to Him. The same as if you literally want to stay in someone’s shadow, you need to be positioned right beside that person. This Psalm is for those having an intimate relationship with God.

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

Psalm 91:1 (NLT)

The second declaration is personal: I declare…. Based on the promise in the first verse, we can declare that God alone is our refuge (divine protection) and safe place. And that we will trust Him, no matter what. This is a very powerful declaration.

You know, when we declare God’s Word, we speak truth over our lives. And God acts on His Word. The power of God manifests when we speak it.

“This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.”

Psalm 91:2 (NLT)

The Psalm then continues with verses 3 to 8, which speaks to us. This part of the Psalm talks about all the things God will rescue and protect us from. All of those will not touch us. We will see it, yes, but it won’t come near us.

“For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished.”

Psalm 91:3-8 (NLT)

Verses 9 to 13 start with an “if.” God will protect us, but not without a condition. God’s blessings are free, true. But they usually come with something we should do first. And that lays in the attitude of our hearts. Here it says that if we make the Lord God our refuge and shelter, He will protect us wherever we go.

“If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!”

Psalm 91:9-13 (NLT)

Psalm 91 ends with a promise by God Himself—a divine promise of protection and blessings. Again, He adds conditions: if we will love Him and trust in His Name.

“The Lord says, ‘will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation’.”

Psalm 91: 14-16 (NLT)

It’s important to understand what this Psalm talks about so you can powerfully use it in your psalm 91 personalized prayer. The words of Psalm 91 speak about God’s protection if we make Him our dwelling place and the first place to go to in times of need.

We can use the word of God in our personal prayer life every day, not just in times of trouble. Praying based on the Scriptures is a powerful source of comfort.

How to pray Psalm 91 1?

When you want to pray Psalm, first take a moment to be in awe of God. God Himself is our security! When we rely on Him, He is a shelter from the storms of life and a shadowy place of security—much like the area under a bird’s wing. He is a refuge where we can run for safety in times of danger and a fortress that will provide a defense against attacking foes.

With this in mind, we can actually read the whole Psalm exactly as it is. Since it is already written in the form of a prayer. You can read it quietly in your spirit or read it aloud. Write the Psalm down, journal your insights, and do a Bible study on the verses (for example, a SOAP Bible study). This will let God’s Word speak more directly to you.

If you want to use Psalm 91 as a personal prayer, you can really personalize it. Personalizing Psalm 91 allows you to deeply connect with the verses and make them applicable to your specific circumstances.

How to personalize Psalm 91?

Praying a Psalm 91 personal prayer is a powerful way to connect with God and His Word. Individualizing the Word of God in our daily lives can easily be done, even if you have never done it before. And you don’t need to have a theology degree for it (LOL).

Just take Psalm 91 in your preferred translation and replace the pronouns with the words “I” and “Me” where it speaks about you. And in the verses that speak about God, make it “Him” and “You.” That is the simple way of how to personalize Psalm 91.

You can use the whole Psalm or parts of it, depending on your need and preference. Write it out and keep it close to your place of prayer. (Or download the Psalm 91 personalized prayer pdf).

Another beautiful way to remind yourself to pray is by hanging Psalm 91 wall art on your wall

After you personalized it, read it for yourself, and make the text your own. While reading, meditate on the Words and let the Holy Spirit bring them to life. You can then pray silently, softly, or loudly. Praying aloud is powerful, as it is a way to declare God’s Word over your life.

You can do this during any time of the day, or in the morning during your Christian morning routine.

Psalm 91 NKJV personalized

When reading God’s Word, it is good to compare various Bible translations, as each speaks differently to your heart. It gives you a deeper understanding of the meaning of the Scriptures.

In the New King James Version (NKJV), Psalm 91 is headed “Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God.” Charles Spurgeon wrote a powerful book, Spurgeon and the Psalms: The Book of Psalms with Devotions, that you also can use as a basis for your prayers.

When you individualize Psalm 91 in the NKJV, you get this Psalm 91 personalized prayer:

“I dwell in the secret place of the Most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.’

Surely He shall deliver me from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover me with His feathers, and under His wings I shall take refuge; His truth shall be my shield and buckler. I shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at my side, and ten thousand at my right hand; but it shall not come near me. Only with my eyes shall I look, and see the reward of the wicked.

Because I have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, my dwelling place, no evil shall befall me, nor shall any plague come near my dwelling; for He shall give His angels charge over me, to keep me in all my ways. In their hands they shall bear me up, lest I dash my foot against a stone. I shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent I shall trample underfoot.

Because I have set my love upon God, therefore He will deliver me; he will set me on high, because I know His name. I shall call upon Him, and He will answer me; He will be with me in trouble; he will deliver me and honor me. With long life He will satisfy me, and show me His salvation.”

It is possible to make it a personalized Psalm 91 with name instead of using “I” and “Me.” Just place your personal name there.

Prayer 2:

Lord, You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. I will fear no evil because You are with me. Even if in my times of great need, I know You will be there for me.

Prayer 3:

Almighty God, save me from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence, be a hedge of protection around me. Cover me with your feathers, and give me refuge under Your wings. I know Your faithfulness will be my shield and rampart.

Prayer 5:

The Lord is my refuge. Thank You Lord Most High for being my dwelling. I know no harm will overtake me and no disaster will come near me or my house. I don’t take it for granted. Amen.
